1. Intro There’s a particular kind of quiet that lingers in the air before you take a photograph. It’s not silence — it’s anticipation.
This week, I’ve been exploring that quiet through the architecture and atmosphere of Japanese onsens — both real and imagined.

2. The Real Earlier this year, I photographed a luxury onsen tucked deep into the mountains. The steam, the cedar, the sound of water folding over stone — every detail felt like a perfectly composed frame before I even raised the camera.
This is what I chase in my work: places that tell a story without saying a word.

3. The Imagined Through ROOM 404, I’ve been experimenting with creating spaces that don’t exist… yet. For this issue, I designed an onsen inspired by brutalist architecture — concrete softened by steam, glass catching the last light of the day.
A place I could almost believe I’ve visited.

4. Creative Process My approach is simple:

  • Observe how light moves through a space.

  • Notice textures that invite touch.

  • Let silence shape the composition.

Whether real or imagined, the principles are the same.

5. Closing reflection Sometimes, the places I create feel like memories from the future. Maybe one day I’ll photograph them for real. Until then, I’ll keep searching — and designing — for those rare spaces where stillness tells the story.
